What to Do When the Garbage Disposal Won’t Drain

A garbage disposal that won't drain can be frustrating and messy. But don’t worry. You don’t always need to call a plumber immediately. Mr. Rooter Plumbing has some steps to try and fix the problem yourself. Here's a guide on what to do when the garbage disposal won't drain, including when it’s time to contact a plumbing service for help.

Check for Obstructions

The first thing to do is check for any obvious obstructions. Turn off the garbage disposal and make sure it’s unplugged. Use a flashlight to look down the drain. If you see any large objects stuck inside, use pliers or tongs to remove them carefully. Never put your hand inside the garbage disposal, even if it’s off.

Reset the Garbage Disposal

Sometimes, a simple reset can solve the problem. Most garbage disposals have a reset button on the bottom, usually a red or black button. Press it, then try running the disposal again. If it works, great! If not, you might need further troubleshooting or contact a plumbing repair service.

Use a Plunger

If resetting doesn’t work, the next step is to try using a plunger. Fill the sink with a small amount of water, just enough to cover the drain. Place the plunger over the drain and give it a few good pumps. This can help dislodge any clogs blocking the drainage. If the water starts to drain, you’ve likely solved the problem. If not, it might be time to consider calling a plumbing service.

Clean the P-Trap

The P-trap is the U-shaped pipe under the sink. It can sometimes get clogged with debris. Place a bucket underneath to catch any water, then use a wrench to loosen the nuts on either P-trap. Remove the trap and clean it out thoroughly. Once it’s clean, reattach it and see if the disposal drains properly. If this doesn’t work, it might be time for a professional garbage disposal repair.

Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar are natural ways to clean minor clogs. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of vinegar. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then flush it with hot water. This can help break down any small clogs and clear out the pipes. If this method doesn’t work, it may be best to call a plumbing repair service for help.

Check the Disposal Blades

Sometimes, the garbage disposal blades can get jammed. Again, ensure the disposal is turned off and unplugged before doing anything. Use a hex key (an Allen wrench) to turn the disposal blades manually. There is usually a slot on the bottom of the disposal. Turn the blades back and forth to see if you can dislodge any blockages. If the blades are still stuck, it’s time to contact a garbage disposal repair expert.

When to Call a Plumber

If you’ve tried all these steps and the garbage disposal still won’t drain, it’s time to call a plumber. A professional plumber has the tools and experience to diagnose and fix the problem. Don’t try to force the issue or take apart more parts of the plumbing yourself, as this can cause more damage and lead to a more expensive repair.

Prevent Future Problems

Once your garbage disposal is working again, it’s important to take steps to prevent future problems. Avoid putting large or hard items, like bones or fruit pits, down the disposal. Also, be cautious with fibrous foods like celery and potato peels, which can wrap around the blades and cause clogs. Run cold water while using the disposal and a few seconds after to help flush everything through the pipes.

Regular Maintenance

Regular maintenance can help keep your garbage disposal running smoothly. Periodically grind up a mixture of ice cubes and salt to clean the blades and remove buildup. You can also grind small pieces of citrus fruit to keep the disposal smelling fresh. Regularly check for any signs of wear and tear, and don’t hesitate to call a plumbing repair service if you notice anything unusual.
